If you open the customers page on this site you will find a layout with no quotes in it and a note saying it is waiting for real ones. That is not an unfinished page. It is the finished version of a decision, and this is the reasoning behind it.
What was there before
Pulse started from a ported marketing site. When we read that site line by line, the customers page carried six five-star testimonials. Each one was attributed by name to a real RecruiterGTM client, praising a product none of them was running. Above them sat two figures: 40+ Agencies on Pulse and 2x faster time to first touch. Neither had a source. At the time the true agency count was zero, because the product had not shipped.
Nobody set out to lie. That page was assembled the way marketing pages get assembled, from a template with placeholder copy that reads as plausible, and the placeholders were never replaced because they did not look like placeholders. A grey box marked IMAGE gets replaced. A sentence in quotation marks with a real person’s name under it looks finished, so it survives.
Why we did not just fix the names
The obvious repair is to go and collect six real quotes. We could not, because at that point there was nobody to collect them from, and the interesting question is what you do in the gap.
There were three options and only one of them is honest.
- Keep the quotes and soften them. Change the names to initials, change the agencies to “a UK boutique”. This is worse, not better: it keeps the claim and removes the only thing that would let a reader check it.
- Delete the page. Tempting, and wrong. The page will exist eventually. Deleting it means the day the first real quote arrives, someone rebuilds the layout from scratch and has to decide all over again what goes in the slot before there are five more.
- Ship the page with the layout and no quotes. The slot exists, it is empty, and it says why. That is what is live.
The third option has a property the first two do not: it makes the absence visible to us. An empty slot on a page we look at is a standing reminder. A deleted page is nothing at all.
The same problem, wearing a price tag
Invented praise is easy to spot once you are looking for it. Invented terms are not, and we found one later.
The pricing page was promising a founding rate for life at fifty dollars a month, for as long as a customer stayed on the plan. The business had never agreed to that. We corrected it: the founding rate lasts three months, and the margin maths went into the internal cost model so the number has something behind it.
Then, reading the pricing config for an unrelated reason, we found the same promise still live in a second place on the same page. The card was sitting directly underneath a comment explaining that the promise had been removed, and directly next to the copy saying the rate lasts three months. The first correction had fixed one of the two, and the page had been contradicting itself in production ever since.
A quote you invent costs a customer’s trust once. A price you publish is a thing a customer will hold you to, and they will be right to. That is why the second one got a ticket of its own rather than a quiet edit.
What it costs to put words in someone’s mouth
The cost is not the embarrassment of being caught, though that is real. It is that a fabricated testimonial destroys the only mechanism you have for the true ones.
Testimonials work because a reader assumes somebody said the words. If one on your page did not, every other quote on every page you own drops to the value of your own marketing copy, which is near zero, and the drop is retroactive. The genuine quotes you collect next year are already discounted by the invented ones you published this year, and there is no edit that undoes it.
This applies specifically to us, and it is worth saying why. Pulse stores candidate records. An agency choosing an ATS is deciding who to hand their people’s names, phone numbers and salary expectations to. Every claim we make before that decision is a sample of how we behave with information. A product that invents a quote on its own website is answering a question the buyer has not asked yet.
Where the rule went
A decision that lives in one person’s memory gets re-made by the next person who needs a page to look finished. So this one is written down in three places, all of them somewhere you have to walk past.
- The product documentation records, in as many words, that there are no customer quotes, no verified agency count, no case studies and no benchmarks, and explains that the point of writing an absence down is that nothing quietly refills it.
- The engineering rules carry never fabricate an answer as a hard rule, next to the rules about transactions and tenancy rather than in a style guide. It is enforced in the product too: an AI run that finds no sources fails rather than writing something plausible.
- When we built the sign-in screen, the empty right-hand panel wanted a testimonial and a customer count, and got neither. It carries a real product shot and the latest real blog post instead. The decision held the second time it was tested, which is the only evidence that a rule is a rule.
When the page fills up
It fills up when an agency running Pulse says something about it and agrees to be named. Not a paraphrase we write and send for approval, not a quote assembled from a call, and not an anonymous one. Their words, their name, their agency.
Until then the slot stays empty, and you can read the emptiness as the most reliable thing on the site: it is the one claim we could have faked and did not.
